Roadrunner Rundown

May 13, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you are enjoying today’s sunny skies after the rain last week.  This reminds us of the lessons we hope our students are learning inside and outside the classroom; that while they often cannot control what is going on around them, they can focus on what they are doing with an “Other People Mindset”, which builds character.  This quote sums it up so well.  “Character strengths aren’t about ignoring the negative. Instead, they help us overcome life’s inevitable adversities.” Jeff Bryan

We hope you can join us this Friday, May 17, 5:30-7:30 pm for the PTA sponsored Family Sports Night & Ice Cream Social for an evening of fun with MRES families and staff.  This event is sponsored by our wonderful PTA and more details can be found below.  Please note that all students must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Roadrunner Rundown

May 6, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are proud of the hard work our 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade students have put into preparing for the SOL tests.  This time of the year is all about balance.

  • A single test on a single day is NOT a referendum on a student’s knowledge base.  It is a single picture of their learning at that moment in time.  We don’t want students stressing about the results as that can impact their ability to focus.
  • At the same time we want students to take their best possible picture by putting forth their best effort at all times.

Testing begins this week so please help your child by making sure they get plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast prior to their testing days.  Please try to avoid scheduling appointments on SOL testing days.

Below is the SOL testing schedule:

  • May 7    grade 4/5 Reading SOL
  • May 8    grade 3/6 Reading SOL
  • May 14  grade 4/5 Math SOL
  • May 15  grade 3/6 Math SOL
  • May 21  grade 5 Science SOL

The last weeks of school bring many fun activities and Field Day is one of them.  Students participate as a class in a variety of activities and games outside lead by our P.E. teachers and parent volunteers.

  • K, 1st and 2nd grade Field Day - Mon, May 20, 9:45 am-12:10 pm
  • 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade Field Day - Fri, May 24, 9:45 am-12:45 pm

A few volunteers are needed on May 24.  Please email Mr. Clancy at [email protected] if you are interested.  Lunch will be provided for parent volunteers.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

Roadrunner Rundown

April 29, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you had a great weekend and are enjoying the lovely weather.

This week the character strength we will focus on is Enthusiasm.  Enthusiasm means you approach life with excitement and energy.  You energize people around you.  Enthusiasm is the ability to bring life and excitement to different situations which often leads to a higher level of involvement and engagement both for individuals and for groups.  One person’s enthusiasm can spark others to think, speak, and act with more energy and conviction.  Consider having a conversation with your child this week about how they can bring enthusiasm to their classroom and to others.

I recognize the busyness of family life sometimes leaves all of us scrambling for breakfast items or a lunch ready to go (ask my two HS aged kids about my preference that they pack food at night not at 7 AM 🙂).  I also recognize that we live in an age of easy food delivery.  We are asking that families do their best to focus on: 1. A healthy lunch goes a long way to provide good energy for learning.  2. The school does provide a healthy lunch option.  Restaurant food is a treat that is likely better for outside of the school day.  3. Food should not be sent for multiple kids in the same way we would not expect any family to send 4 cupcakes to school where students sit in groups of 6-8 as we don’t want to leave others out.  Please know that food delivery for students is not an approved practice at the MS and HS level either.

There will be no school for students this Friday, May 3 as this is a Teacher Workday for staff.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

Roadrunner Rundown

April 22, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

It was wonderful to see so many of you at International Night on Friday evening.  The evening was a showcase of the rich diversity of our school community.  Last year there were 22 country tables.  This year we had 31 tables with artifacts, information, maps, and a delicious array of foods and drinks.  We got a chance to see dance performances from four different communities!  This was also a testimony to the power and presence of our PTA without whom this event would not have been possible.  Our students had the opportunity to witness not only the sharing of cultures but our community from around the globe (speaking of the earth, Earth Week info below) assembled and sharing peace and joy.  The coming together of cultures, the opportunity to learn about each other, and the willingness to spend time together is where our children can see the practices of peace, understanding, and hope in action.  As adults, it is our job to model the way of inclusion and kindness.  More to come on this theme in upcoming communications.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

Upcoming School Health Services Satisfaction Survey April 15-26

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) and Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) School Health Services invites parents/guardians of FCPS students to participate in a survey requesting feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health Services provided to the school community.

FCHD employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in FCPS.  To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians who interact with the school health rooms.  The survey will be open April 15-26 and should take approximately five minutes to complete.  Click here to complete and submit survey.  Translations are available here.

New Regulation on Meditation and Reflection Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division.  The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis.  Families are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher regarding accommodations.  More information can be found at the Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage.  Translations are available in Spanish and Korean.

Roadrunner Rundown

April 8, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are glad to see warmer weather in the forecast and are looking forward to another week filled with a variety of learning opportunities, some which will take place outdoors.

Student and staff safety is a priority at MRES, especially during arrival and dismissal.  Students may not be dropped off or picked up on Marshall Road or in the cul-de-sacs on Marshall Road.  Parents using Door 3 for arrival and dismissal are asked to either walk or park up by the VAC pool.  Our crossing guard has reported that parents are dropping students off from their cars along Marshall Road or using the back parking lot as an alternative to the K&R line.  For the safety of our students, families driving to the school for arrival or pick up, MUST use the K&R line.  Door 3 and Door 7 are to be used for students who are walking.  If you need to pick up your child early, please notify the office ahead of time.  The last time for a parent to pick up a student prior to dismissal is 3:40 pm.   Thank you for helping us keep everyone safe.

As we shared last week, we will begin class placements for next school year very soon.  We invite parents to offer their perspective on friendships and on any unique needs your child has that we might not be aware of.  Please do not make requests for a specific teacher.  If you have information to share about your child that will assist us, please complete this form no later than Friday, April 26.  Please know that this is a hard deadline.  Any requests received after this date will not be considered.  When completing the form, please be sure to list each child in your family separately and identify the grade your child will be in next year.  Finally, we will take into account the information that you send us, but those final decisions rest only with our school team.  Thank you for being mindful of the process and deadlines.

There will be no school for students and staff this Wednesday, April 10.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Roadrunner Rundown

April 3, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you had a wonderful spring break!  Our staff members have returned refreshed and ready to jump into the 4th quarter.  The final quarter of the school year will be filled with learning in a variety of settings (inside and outside) with activities to engage our students.  We encourage you to talk with your children about how they can make this last quarter their best yet!

We will begin the class placement process for next year soon, and we would like to explain how we handle this at Marshall Road ES.  Homeroom and Specials teachers spend much time reflecting on the school year and discussing your children with whom they have developed such close relationships; this work is both careful and thorough.

In making placements into the next grade’s homerooms, we seek to build positive communities rather than assigning students to a particular teacher, which would limit our ability to build effective classroom dynamics.  We strive for a fairly even mix of girls and boys, and we take into account the many new students who will join us next school year.  While we do believe that it is important for children to have friends in their class, we also want them to be open to forming new friendships while at school.

Teachers spend many hours each day with their students and know who works well with whom.  However, we invite parents to offer their perspective on friendships and on any unique needs your child has that we might not be aware of.  Please do not make requests for a specific teacher.  We have the utmost confidence in all our teachers and have seen over the years that children and parents are able to form strong academic and personal relationships with many different teachers and styles.  It might also be helpful for you to know that students often rotate out of their homerooms for different subjects and small groups.  We will also be hiring new teachers who will be wonderful additions to our faculty.

Your input is optional, and teachers will not schedule conferences specifically to discuss placement.  If you have information to share about your child that will assist us, please complete this form no later than Friday, April 26Please know that this is a hard deadline.  Any requests received after this date will not be considered.  When completing the form, please be sure to list each child in your family separately and identify the grade your child will be in next year.  Finally, let me remind you that we will take into account the information that you send us, but those final decisions rest only with our school team.  Thank you for being mindful of the process and deadlines.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

March 18, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are looking forward to the Finding Nemo performances taking place this week!  Our students have worked hard and are ready to share this wonderful production with you.  Family and friends are welcome to attend on Wednesday, March 20 or Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 pm.  Students will see the play during the school day but feel free to bring your children back for an evening performance.  Please note that a "no camera/no phone/no device" policy will be in effect at all performances due to licensure restrictions.  The show will be professionally recorded (courtesy of the PTA) and a link to the video will be provided to families once it is finalized.

It is hard to believe that our 3rd quarter ends this Friday, March 22.  We will dive into the 4th quarter after spring break and embrace all of the learning opportunities it will bring.  We invite you to brainstorm with your children about ways to make the last quarter of this school year the best!

There will be no school and the office will be closed March 25-29 during spring break.  We hope you have a wonderful week filled with fun and rest.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Immunization Update Plan: Is Your Child Up to Date?

On-time vaccination throughout childhood is essential because it helps provide immunity before children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases.  FCPS will be implementing an updated Immunization Notice Process to increase immunization compliance across the school district, effective Monday, March 11.  A student whose immunizations do not meet the school immunization requirements may be excluded from school for the protection of the student in the event of a public health emergency or a vaccine-preventable outbreak.

Students who are not up-to-date on their school required immunizations will receive a Notice of Conditional Enrollment, which will provide the list of noncompliant immunizations as well as the reason for noncompliance.  A 90-day conditional enrollment period will be allowed to obtain the required immunizations.  Upon the expiration of the conditional enrollment period, students will then receive a Past Due Immunization Notice.  The Past Due Immunization Notice includes language stating ‘Per the Code of Virginia, your student may not be allowed to attend school until the necessary immunization documentation is received.’

Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are glad to see the signs that spring is just around the corner.  This time of year reminds us of the growth we see in our students.  Sometimes growth is not evident in the moment and then one day a bud appears, ready to blossom.

This time of year brings new opportunities to learn outside.  Garden lessons and activities are a wonderful part of learning at MRES.   We welcome this new season and the opportunities for growth and learning that it brings.

We often see a shift in attendance with the arrival of warmer weather as students participate in more after school activities.  We want to emphasize the importance attendance has in student success.  Studies show that just two absences per month can negatively impact a student's academic progress.  Our dedicated teachers are constantly teaching new concepts, while our students actively learn and build upon their knowledge every day.  By ensuring regular attendance, we can all work together to help students finish the school year strong.  Visit the FCPS website for more information.

Please mark your calendars for the Marshall Road production of Finding Nemo.  Family and friends are welcome to attend a performance on Wednesday, March 20 or Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 pm.  Students will see the play during the school day but feel free to bring your children back for an evening performance.  We are thrilled that Ashton Schaffer, former MRES graduate, will be directing the play again.  We are very proud of 5th and 6th students who have been working hard to put this performance together.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Description/Date

Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

This week is a bit different as we greet your children today and then have a staff planning day tomorrow as FCPS sites are polling stations for the upcoming election cycles on “Super Tuesday”.  We will welcome students back on Wednesday for the remainder of the week’s learning.   At the end of this week, we are just two full school weeks away from Spring Break (March 25-29).  All grade levels are working to implement a Portrait of Learning experience before Spring Break.  This is a time when students will be asked to consider a completed task(s) and consider how they have grown in the skill their class chose for either the Communicator or Goal Directed and Resilient attributes of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate.  The reflection simply centers around these three thoughts: How did I grow as a…?, What evidence do I have to show this growth?, and Why does this skill matter?  We will continue this practice as we work through the school year to deepen our students' reflections on their growth and learning, and use evidence to support their claims.

We will be celebrating Women’s History Month this month where we will recognize and celebrate the important roles women have made to society.  When you enter the front lobby, you will see a thoughtful pop-up museum in the display cabinet focusing on the various contributions of women in the past and present.  Displays will be placed in hallways; classroom discussions will take place and other activities are planned to honor women throughout the month.

Over the weekend several Odyssey of the Mind teams from the before school program competed in the local tournament.  Thanks to coach Amanda Hexel for her time, guidance and this feedback: our Primary Team/The Night LIfe (Bilge Duygu, Zoey Fink, Sophia Gregory, Michael Hexel, Penelope Hexel and Claire Schambach) were a favorite of the judges.  They loved their team work, skit and their originality.  The Division 1 Team /Rockin World Detour Team (Ariana Ahmed, Saige Bilidas, Kerem Duygu, Naveli Gambhir and Beverly Hexel) came in 3rd which is amazing considering some of the other teams have been doing this for a couple of years and working on it all year.  The judges loved their hair styles and the moral of their skit.  Great job students!

Have a great week!

Much peace.

Dear Marshall Road Families,

While the lack of snow this weekend might have been a disappointment for those hoping to sled or hibernate at home, we hope the extra time spent with family and friends was enjoyed by all.

Last week FCPS Office of Safety and Security Staff led a training session with our staff who are members of the Crisis Management Team.  We meet annually to ensure that we are prepared in case of an emergency.  Below is a video we were asked to share with parents so that you are familiar with the terms and plans in case of an emergency.

I look forward to chatting with you on Wednesday at 6:30 pm when I will explain our GreatSchools rating as well as data that I believe defines MRES.

Have a great week.

Dear Marshall Road Families,

HDR, Inc., a local architecture and engineering firm, donated 24 bikes (with petals to be added later), helmets, bike racks, and a tire pump to MRES as part of the All Kids Bike Program.  The goal of this program is that all children have the opportunity to learn how to bike.  Our kindergarten students were invited to last week’s assembly where the bikes were revealed and they were given the opportunity to glider ride a bike with the assistance of HDR volunteers and staff.  It is wonderful to be a part of such a giving community.

Did you attend the Science Share late Thursday or hear about how amazing it was?  The engagement from students and families was fantastic.  A big thank you to Michelle Weinberger, for her vision and passion for STEAM Night.  Students were engaged in hands-on activities that we hope will spur them to a deeper interest and learning.  This event was brought to use by the PTA and Michelle’s volunteerism.  The PTA is in need of more volunteers to plan or support similar activities.  Please consider how you might support one activity this year.  Upcoming events are:

  • International Night (April 19)
  • Bike/Walk/Run to Breakfast (May 7)
  • Family Sports Night/Ice Cream Social (May 17).

This week we are celebrating Staff Appreciation Week (more below). We want to celebrate ALL of the many people who work hard to support all aspects of the student’s experience each day.

Please join us for the hybrid PTA Meeting next Wednesday,  February 21 at 6:30 pm.  The PTA will be electing the nominating committee.  There have been some questions about the GreatSchools rating.  I will share some information about this as well as data that I believe defines MRES.

There will be no school on Monday, February 19 in honor of Presidents’ Day.

Have a great week!

Much peace.

Dear Parents,

This week we begin our school wide celebration of Black History Month.  We have boulevards (hallways named as streets) to honor African-Americans who have contributed to different walks of life.  Students will be able to walk the halls and see how these individuals shared their gifts and talents with their communities and our country.

Student safety is our highest priority, so we need to make you aware of a dangerous situation.  If you are driving to pick up your child and meeting them on Marshall Road, please park at Vienna Aquatic Center parking lot and cross using the flashing signal at Marshall Rd and Pickett Pl.  Please obey the NO PARKING signs on Marshall Rd and Rachel Ln to prevent students from crossing Marshall Road during this busy time. These signs were installed after a student was hit by a car several years ago. Thank you for helping us all keep each other safe.

We hope you can join us for our Science Share/STEAM Night taking place this Thursday, February 8, 5:30-7:00 pm.  Student Science Fair projects will be displayed and students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of STEAM activities.  We are proud of our student scientists.

Roadrunner Rundown

Principal Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

Our 2nd quarter ended on Thursday which means we are halfway through the year.  We are definitely talking about student learning and you can have that conversation with your child too!  The dinner time or end of the day can be fraught with schedules, fatigue, emotions or simply the lack of time.  If there can be a time to pause, even just once or twice a week, maybe there is space for questions such as:

  • What is something you learned at school that surprised you?
  • What is something you learned that you can ask me to see if I know it?
  • What is a problem you solved and how did you know how to do it?
  • What can you teach me about?

These conversations don’t need to turn into tests or spelling or math drills, just tiny conversations which may unfold moments of curiosity and wonder for everyone.

Have a great week!

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett
