Roadrunner Rundown

October 28, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

Students and staff enjoyed the Runathon Kickoff on Friday where we gathered for the unveiling of the runathon video. Rhodie, our roadrunner mascot, made his appearance, along with a special lama friend. Students were encouraged to continue to grow in being “rooted in kindness” and to get involved in the Runathon by cheering, walking, running and/or raising funds to support the PTA.  Red runathon packets were sent home with students with information about how you can support the PTA with their one fundraiser of the year.

Our 1st Quarter ends on Thursday, October 31 and students will be dismissed 2 hours early.  Other upcoming changes to our schedule are:

  • November 1, Holiday - no school
  • November 4, School Planning Day - no school
  • November 5, Teacher Workday - no school
  • November 11, Holiday - no school

The end of the quarter is a great time to celebrate with your children their accomplishments of the 1st quarter and to discuss ways they can make the 2nd quarter even better. Teachers have been and continue to hold Parent/Teachers Conferences over the next few weeks. If you have not scheduled a time to meet with your child’s teacher, please reach out to schedule a time to touch base. Meeting early in the school year is a great way to ask questions and hear from the teacher about your child’s progress.

There is lots of good information below, please take a moment to go through it.

Have a great week!

For more information, please watch this video: https://youtu.be/dwJCXpMB0EU.

Attendance Matters

We know there are a variety of days off over the next two months.  Please, please work with us to assure your students are present for all the days we are in school!!  Below are some tips that can make a difference in having regular attendance.

  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine, making sure children get 9 to 11 hours of sleep.
  • Make sure that when the lights go out, so do the cell phones, video games, and computers.
  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
  • Touch base with teachers or administrators if you have questions or concerns about your child’s attendance.
  • Set an example for your child. Show him or her that attendance matters to you and that you won’t allow an absence unless someone is truly sick.

MRES Staff Spotlight

Ms. Rajesh, one of our Special Education teachers, has won the PTA priority parking spot for the week! This is her 8th year at MRES. She initially stepped in to fill in a short-term vacancy. Then she was asked to support Special Education students and found a path to pursue a second career quite different from her field of Economics & Human Resources. Ms. Rajesh loves supporting her students and their families. She commented: "I owe my growth to the MRES community (students, colleagues, families & admin team) for their encouragement & trust". She can fluently speak, read, and write 3 very distinctive regional languages of India apart from English and she enjoys what she does at Marshall Road!

Roadrunner Rundown

October 21, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you had a wonderful fall weekend and had opportunities to be outside and enjoy the beauty of this season. Our students have been hard at work alongside their teachers. By now you likely have seen the unit 1 student “magazine” that students were using as part of their language arts instruction; ask your student to share this with you if they have not already done so. Students in 2nd and 3rd grade have done some great work in their “scientific field journals” during the Gardening specials class. 5th grade students have been using evidence from their text to highlight character traits. Last week our 4th graders traveled back in time via a trip to historic Jamestown and our kindergarteners explored nature by spending some time at Cox Farms.

Our runathon will give us an opportunity to enjoy time outdoors together. This annual event is taking place on Friday, November 8 and parents are invited to join their children by cheering, walking or running. We would like to recognize our veterans at the beginning of each run. If you are a veteran and will be attending, please let us know by emailing Karlen McClain at [email protected]

The Runathon times are:

10:00 am - grades 2, 3

11:15 am – grades 4, 5, 6

1:45 pm – grades K, 1

Our second 3-hour early release will take place next Monday, October 28.  Parents/guardians are expected to use the same dismissal plan that was previously communicated to the school for the first early dismissal. We want to ensure all of our students get home safely, as planned. Your cooperation is needed so that your family’s plan is clear. SACC will be open at 1:05 pm for those who have students enrolled in SACC. If you plan on picking up your child between the early and regular dismissal times, please know we are operating on an altered schedule in various locations, this may take longer than usual. If your child is staying until the regular dismissal time, please send a snack, if possible.

Safety at arrival and dismissal is a priority and it is imperative that all families follow the guidelines.  Whether it’s raining, cold, orchestra/band day, or your child is running late, there is no stopping or parking along Marshall Road. For everyone’s safety please ONLY cross the street at the designated crosswalks. The Kiss & Ride entrance is on Dellwood Drive and is the only place where children can be dropped off. Thank you for keeping our community safe!

Have a great week!

SEL Screener Participation Social and Emotional Learning Screening

FCPS is committed to supporting all students’ mental wellness and social and emotional learning. FCPS approved a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Screener that students use to share their perspectives on how well their school and community help them develop skills they need to succeed. These skills include achieving goals, understanding and managing emotions, establishing and maintaining relationships with adults and peers, and making responsible decisions. Students also share how successful their school and community are at making them feel valued, included, and supported. These factors are critical to positive academic, social, and emotional success. All students in grades 3-12 have the opportunity to participate in the screener twice a year, in the fall and spring.

Marshall Road ES has scheduled the administration of the SEL Screener for this week, October 21-25. Opt-out forms have been shared through the Parent Digital Consent System and a digital copy is also available. Please reach out to Meg Gillespie at [email protected] or 703-937-1558 if you have questions.

Chronic Absenteeism: What is it, and why does it matter?

Chronic absenteeism (missing more than 10% of the school year) has been connected to significant problems for students as young as kindergarten and first grade. It is also associated with failure to read and do math on grade level in third grade.

Students will likely be sick at some time during the year. Students can come to school with a simple cough/cold and at other times they may need to stay home because of an illness. Please have children attend at all other times.

How can you help?

  • Avoid vacations that require your child to miss school.
  • Set a regular bedtime and morning routine, with clothes and needed materials laid out the night before, so your child does not miss the bus or arrive late at school.

Roadrunner Rundown

October 15, 2024

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you enjoyed the long weekend and the beautiful weather it brought.  We had great support on Saturday from families to beautify the front of the building and to prepare parts of the courtyard for our new turtle enclosure!  Additionally, we mulched under the tent out back - goodbye mud pit 🙂.

Yesterday was a packed and productive day for our staff who were involved in professional development, team building, and planning for the remainder of the first quarter.

We will have our second 3-hour early release on Monday, October 28.  Parents/guardians are expected to use the same dismissal plan that was previously communicated to the school for the first early dismissal. Book Character Pumpkin Patch

We will be decorating the MRES Library with painted/decorated pumpkins representing some of our favorite books and book characters again this year for our 2nd annual Book Character Pumpkin Patch. This is an optional activity that some of our teachers, staff, and students will be participating in. Families are welcome to decorate and paint a pumpkin at home too! If you would like to decorate a pumpkin at home, just be sure it represents a book or book character (google “Book Character Pumpkins” for inspiration!). You can use a real pumpkin, which the school will compost when the event is over OR you can also use an artificial pumpkin which will then be returned to you/your child. Pumpkins can be dropped off in the main office or in the Library and are due by Monday, October 21st. Contact Librarian, Lisa Hoffman, with any questions/concerns: [email protected].

Attendance Matters

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow

  • A Caring Culture that creates a sense of belonging is a key component for students to attend school regularly.
  • Being in school helps students to get to know peers, teachers, and school staff, and to create trusting relationships that motivate students to participate in learning.
  • Students and their families should reach out to a trusted adult at the school—a teacher, counselor, school social worker or administrator—if they are having a hard time attending school every day.
  • Schools help students and families gain access to basic resources such as meals, physical and mental health services, and fun enrichment activities including sports, clubs, music, afterschool, and summer programs.

Expectations for Student Absences Reported through ParentVUE

Parents and caregivers can report full-day absences for the current school day and the next four school days using ParentVUE. For absences that extend beyond this five-day window, parents and caregivers must report these directly to the school by calling the attendance line (703-937-1515) or using the attendance email ([email protected]). Parents and caregivers must also report late arrivals and early dismissals directly to the school, as partial-day absences cannot be recorded in ParentVUE.

Please be aware that processing parent-submitted attendance is a mandatory responsibility. It is essential that these reports are handled promptly and accurately to maintain the integrity of our attendance records. Please use the Review Parent Submitted Attendance quick reference guide for detailed information on the process.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued commitment to student attendance.

Chronic Absenteeism: What is it, and why does it matter?

Missing 18 days of school in one school year, for any reason, is considered chronic absenteeism. While 18 days might not sound like a lot, it means that a student who misses as few as two days a month is considered chronically absent.

Let’s make sure students are getting enough sleep.  Elementary age children benefit greatly from 9-11 hours of sleep a night.  Establishing good nighttime routines, such as “screens down” time an hour before bedtime are helpful.  Reading with your child at the end of the evening is a great way to ease into bedtime and a relaxing way to end the day with your child.

Report Future Absences through ParentVUE

Parents and caregivers can report up to two consecutive full-day absences using ParentVUE. For absences longer than two days, please contact the school at [email protected] or call 703-937-1515 and leave a message.

All Day Absences: The Attendance feature in ParentVUE is the FCPS secure web solution for reporting all day absences only not partial absences. For more information on this feature, click here https://www.fcps.edu/attendance.

Partial Absence: To report late arrivals, early dismissals, or to update already submitted attendance, please contact the school at [email protected] or call 703-937-1515 and leave a message.

Marshall Road ES has scheduled the administration of the SEL Screener for the week of October 21-25. Opt-outs forms have been shared through the Parent Digital Consent System and a digital copy is available. Questions? Please reach out to Meg Gillespie at [email protected] or 703-937-1558.

Fall Garden Clean-Up

Please sign-up to see a list of projects and rsvp to make sure we have enough doughnuts and cider for volunteers. Many hands make light work! Hope to see you there!

Runathon

The 14th Annual Runathon is Friday, November 8. Students, teachers, and parents/caregivers will run laps during the school day to earn money for MRES! This is our ONE main fundraiser of the year. Money raised supports the PTA’s programs throughout the year, including community events (like our Family Picnics, Bike/Walk/Run to Breakfast, International Night, STEAM Night, and Ice Cream Social), author visits, classroom grants, teacher appreciation, and much more!

Roadrunner Rundown

September 30, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you  had a great weekend and were able to appreciate the ways rain can help us slow down as well as the sun making a guest appearance on Saturday!  This quote is a great reminder as we begin the week with cloudy skies and rain.

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow,

you gotta put up with the rain”

-Dolly Parton

Speaking of weather, we will continue to use outdoor spaces as much as possible.  Please have your children dress in layers and label all jackets and coats so those left behind can be returned to the correct student.  Our Lost and Found is located outside the cafeteria.  There are many jackets, water bottles and other personal items that have been found and left there.  Please have your child check our Lost & Found for items they are missing.  All unclaimed items will be donated the first week of November.

There will be no school this Thursday, October 3 (holiday) and Friday, October 4 (Teacher Workday).

Have a great week!

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

School Events and Information

Dining Room Assistant Needed

We are looking for a Dining Room Assistant to join our team this school year.  The schedule for this position is Monday-Friday, 11:00 am-2:30 pm.  Please contact Karlen McClain at [email protected] if you have questions or are interested in applying.

Call for Parent Musicians

Are you a musician interested in performing for our students?  We are excited to celebrate the good behavior of our students in the cafeteria by providing Friday Lunch Live, a display of any age appropriate music (classical, jazz, pop etc) during their lunch time on Fridays.  Please email Karlen McClain at [email protected] if you are interested.  We hope this fun incentive will keep the positive behavior going.

Fall Picture Day

Picture Day is scheduled for Thursday, October 10.  Pictures will be available for viewing online approximately two weeks following our school's photo day.  Pictures may be preordered online.  Questions about ordering?  Email Victor O'Neill at [email protected].

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow

Attending school every day is critical to students reaching their fullest potential.  Regular attendance helps students engage in learning that builds proficiency in reading and math, which will help them to graduate from high school as well as a variety of critical and creative thinking skills which will help them in all areas of life.

  • Students who attend school regularly do better academically in middle school. They are also more likely to graduate on time from high school, if they miss less than a week of school each semester.
  • Daily attendance routines, created at home or in school, can reduce stress for students and families, and create a sense of safety and security, especially after chaotic transitions.

Report Future Absences through ParentVUE

Parents and caregivers can report up to two consecutive full-day absences using ParentVUE.  For absences longer than two days, please contact the school at [email protected] or call 703-937-1515 and leave a message.

All Day Absences: The Attendance feature in ParentVUE is the FCPS secure web solution for reporting all day absences.  For more information on this feature, click here https://www.fcps.edu/attendance

Partial Absence: To report late arrivals, early dismissals, or to update already submitted attendance, please contact the school at [email protected] or call 703-937-1515 and leave a message.

Safeway Pharmacy Immunization Clinics on October 8 and 12

Safeway Pharmacy will be providing immunizations for all FCPS students at no cost!  Parents or guardians may schedule an appointment and provide consent for their student(s).  The immunization clinics are being held at Frost Middle School, 4101 Pickett Rd. Fairfax, VA 22032, on:

  •  Tuesday, October 8, 3:00-7:00 pm
  •  Saturday, October 12, 9:00-5:00 pm

Students under the age of 19, with a scheduled appointment and parental consent, must be accompanied by their parent, guardian, or another adult over the age of 18.

Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are highly encouraged to avoid wait times.  A parent or guardian must accompany walk-in students under the age of 19 in order to provide consent.

Marshall Road ES has scheduled the administration of the SEL Screener for the week of October 21-25.  Opt-outs forms are available through the Parent Digital Consent System.  A digital copy can be found here.  Questions?  Please reach out to Meg Gillespie at [email protected] or (703) 937-1558.

Custodian Appreciation Day

This Wednesday, October 2, we will recognize Rich, Sharron, Jessica, Haifeng, Jessica and Pablo, our amazing custodial team at MRES.  Each day these custodians make our school safe, clean, and run smoothly.  Without them, our school couldn't function.  They are a key part of our students' daily lives at MRES.  We thank them all so much and appreciate everything they do!  Please encourage your students to take some time and thank them too.  On behalf of all MRES families, the PTA will provide a gift and lunch to the custodial team.

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We are glad to share that our first 3 hour early release went smoothly today.  Thank you for communicating your dismissal plans for your children with us and for your patience as we navigated this new schedule to allow our teachers more planning time.  Please mark your calendars for the upcoming 3 hour release days which will take place on October 28, December 9, February 24, March 17, April 28 and May 19.

This is  the time of year when we see more sick children in the clinic.  Please make sure you have emergency back-ups listed on your Emergency Care Form to pick your child up in case you are unable to do so.  Sick students should be picked up within an hour of the parent receiving the call from the school.

Have a great week!

School Events and Information

Attendance Matters

Your children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year or about 18 days. That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it.

  • Some absences are unavoidable.  We understand that children will get sick and need to stay home occasionally.  The important thing is to get your children to school as often as possible.
  • If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unexcused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom.
  • Attendance matters as early as kindergarten.  Studies show many children who miss too many days in kindergarten and first grade can struggle academically in later years.  They often have trouble mastering reading by the end of third grade.
  • Too many absent students can affect the whole classroom, creating churn and slowing down instruction.

Lost and Found

Please have your child check our Lost and Found (outside the cafeteria) for sweatshirts, jackets and water bottles. To prevent lost items, we ask that you write the last name of your student on their belongings.  Items with names on them can be returned to the student instead of the Lost and Found.  All items will be donated at the end of the quarter in November.

Roadrunner Rundown

September 16, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

Thank you so much for your input as we plan for the first 3 hour release which will take place next Monday, September 23.  Students will have lunch prior to the early dismissal.  Students leaving early will be released at 1:05 pm and those staying will be released at the regular time of 4:05 pm so student pickup times at the bus stops, Kiss & Ride lane and doors for walkers should be adjusted accordingly.

Regarding cell phones and smartwatches, the FCPS official policy is “Away for The Day.”  Students in Grades 3-6 were reminded during their SR&R lessons that all cell phones should be turned off and stored in their backpacks during the school day.  Any students with smart watches can wear their watch as long as it is not connected to  WiFi (ideally in airplane mode).  Students should only be using their smart watch as a watch.  If you need to contact your child please call the school and we will have your student come to the office.

We do not allow edible treats of any kind to be brought to school to share with other students in the cafeteria or classroom for your child’s birthday or for any other occasion.  You are welcome to recognize your child’s birthday at school by donating a book to the classroom library or sending in pencils or stickers for the students in the classroom.  Please respect the school’s request and find creative, non-edible ways to celebrate birthdays at school.  This eliminates issues with allergies and unhealthy foods but also protects instructional time.

We are proud to share that the Thoreau Middle School Band was selected for the VMA award!  They are one out of two middle schools that were selected.  The music programs at MRES are a stepping stone for this type of honor.

Have a great week!

Holidays are important as is connecting with family and home countries and the cost of travel is a factor but travel during the academic year is considered an unexcused absence by FCPS/VDOE.  Contact the attendance office if your child will be absent due to traveling.  Families will be contacted by the school after five unexcused absences.

Immunization Requirements

Please check with your health care provider as soon as possible to make sure your child is up to date on the immunizations required by the state of Virginia.  Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.  To clarify, this date applies to NEWLY enrolled students or PRE-EXISTING enrolled students who have been contacted by their Registrar as being NON-COMPLIANT with required vaccines.

How Families Can Help with Attendance

  • Make school attendance a priority.  Parents can log into the Student Information System (SIS) Parent Account to view your child's attendance. For additional support with accessing and using the SIS Parent Account visit our SIS Parent Account overview page.
  • Help your student stay engaged.  View handouts for families from AttendanceWorks.
  • Communicate with the school.  If parents are aware of a future absence, such as a full day absence for a civic engagement activity (middle or high school) or cultural observance, they may contact the school to report the absence and related date.  Extended absences, typically for hardship reasons, must be documented and submitted to the school principal at least three to five school days in advance for review and action. Roadrunner Rundown

September 3, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you had a wonderful long weekend especially with the lovely fall-like weather.

We look forward to seeing you tonight at Back to School Night.  The first 15 minutes of your time band will be a classroom visit and the final 30 minutes will be presentations regarding academic instruction, critical thinking and social-emotional learning.  You are invited to stop by the library before or after your visit to the classroom to meet Principal Chapman and meet Specials teachers in the lobby!  BTSN is for parents and is not a time for individual conferences about individual students, you will receive some information about when conferences will begin to take place during the presentation.

  • Kindergarten and 1st Grade: 5:00-5:45 pm
  • 2nd and 3rd grades: 6:00-6:45 pm
  • 4th, 5th and 6th grades: 7:00-7:45 pm

We are excited that School Board Member Melanie Meren will be joining us tonight in the library.  Please stop by to speak with her and take a moment to listen to the School Board Welcome Back Messages below.

As we shared last week, the Early Release Mondays (7 times throughout the school year) planned throughout the school year for elementary schools are essential to allow educators time for planning and professional development.  Students will be dismissed 3 hours early and are encouraged to return home via their normal route.  However, we understand there may be a childcare hardship because of the early release Mondays for many of our families.  If you have not already done so, please complete the Afterschool Form for Release Monday by this Friday, September 6 to help us plan for our school’s child care needs for our students on September 23 and October 28.

Student and staff safety at arrival and dismissal is a top priority.  It is crucial that everyone follow the guidelines.

  • Cross only at the crosswalks by Vienna Aquatic Club (the pool) and Delilah Drive
  • No U-turns on Marshall Road or at the top of Rachel Lane
  • No stopping on Marshall Road to let students out or pick them up

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Attendance Matters

Below are 10 facts about the importance of regular school attendance.

  1. Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year.  Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school. Read more...
  2. The most recent federal data show that in the 2020-2021 school year, at least 14.7 million students nationwide were chronically absent.  This means that chronic absence has almost doubled from the more than 8 million students, pre-Covid-19, who were missing so many days of school that they were academically at risk. Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS.  Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes.  Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year.  Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill.  However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school.  Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill.  We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies.  Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations.  It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

Roadrunner Rundown

August 19, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

The halls and classrooms today were brimming with excitement today!  We want to share a vision of how our staff views the MRES school community:  Our school is like a garden.  We don’t plant only one kind of plant.  They all need to be tended to but in their unique ways.  They all need to be cared for but they all don’t need the same care.  So we don’t water them all the same.   They do need to be harvested and admired; planted and replanted so they can sustain growth.  All plants will need to stretch down into the soil and extend skyward.

Our theme for the year is Rooted in Kindness and this starts in each classroom and the goal is for the roots of kindness to go deeper as they strengthen the connections in our building and into the community.

Teachers will be sending home yellow Tuesday Folders with students each week, beginning tomorrow, when there is information to be shared.  This is a major way we communicate school and PTA news.  This week's  folders will contain important start of school year information.  Please return forms as soon as you are able and remind your student to return the yellow folder ASAP.

Please be sure to send a water bottle and snack with your child daily and label them.  Teachers give students a snack break in the morning or afternoon, depending on when their lunch is scheduled.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett, and Kelly Willis

Administrative Team

School Events and Information

Transportation

The first few weeks our buses and Kiss& Ride lane are slow.  Buses often arrive late despite their best effort.  We load buses slowly to avoid errors and are cautious with how many students come out to Kiss & Ride at one time.  In time, the whole process will move faster.  To help us please adhere to the following:

  • Do not park and attempt to come in to pick up your child because the Kiss & Ride line is long; do not park and then try to back out in the Kiss & Ride lot.
  • Make sure your student has their Kiss & Ride tag and to the best of their ability know how they are going home.
  • Be patience with us, we are all in this together.

Attendance Matters

  • Regular school attendance in elementary school improves the chances children will read on grade level.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of the school year are more likely to graduate high school on time.
  • Starting in Kindergarten, missing 10 percent (or about 18 days) can make it harder to learn to read. (That is just a day or two days every few weeks).

Back to School Night

This informative evening will be held on Tuesday, September 3 at the times listed below.  You will be able to spend time in your child’s classroom and hear from grade level teams about the year to come.  Please take a few minutes to stop by the library before or after your visit to the classroom to meet Principal Chapman and meet Specials teachers in the lobby!  This event is for parents.

  • Kindergarten and 1st Grade: 5:00-5:45 pm
  • 2nd and 3rd grades: 6:00-6:45 pm
  • 4th, 5th and 6th grades: 7:00-7:45 pm

Roadrunner Rundown

August 12, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

Our staff came together this morning for the first meeting of the new school year.  It was wonderful to reconnect with one another and share about our summer adventures.  We also spent time reflecting on the year past as we look forward to the year ahead of us.  Our theme this year expands on our theme from last year by connecting to a core tenant of our Marshall Road identity as we focus on being “Rooted in Kindness”.

NOW is the time to start preparing for a return to the structure of a school schedule by adjusting when we settle down for the night and time we get up.  Let’s start to build up our rhythm by getting a good night’s sleep.  Pro tip: decrease screen time leading up to bed time, target an earlier bedtime if you have been staying up late, start using a morning routine when waking up that has you ready to walk out to school or to a bus stop on time!

Student teacher assignments will be released in ParentVUE on August 15.  Information about setting up or logging on to your ParentVUE account can be found here.  Please call the main office if you are unable to access this information.

We will be holding school tours for new MRES families Wednesday, August 14 at 9:00 am followed by a PTA sponsored playdate on the playground from 10:00-11:00 am.

You are invited to our Open House this Friday,  August 16 to visit your child’s classroom and meet their teacher.   School supplies can be brought to the classroom, medications to our clinic, cash or checks to the cafeteria for deposit on student accounts.

  • Session 1 - 9:00-9:30 am – A - L (alpha last name)
  • Session 2 - 9:45-10:15 am – M-Z (alpha last name)

We hope you enjoy this last week of summer break and are looking forward to a wonderful school year.

Have a great week.

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Toni Nauflett and Kelly Willis

Roadrunner Rundown

July 29, 2024

Principal's Message

Dear Marshall Road Families,

We hope you are having a wonderful summer!  While summer is not yet over, the start of a new school year is not far away.  The change of schedule and scenery is a precious gift this time of year.  We hope your summer has been filled with rest, rejuvenation and of course…reading 🙂  We look forward to having students join us again to share their summer adventures!

Our staff is enjoying a well-deserved break, and we are busy planning for the 2024-2025  school year.  Our custodial team has been working hard to provide a shiny new look around our building.  Last year our theme was “Growing Kindness” and as we focus on who we are and who we aspire to be as a community, this year our theme will be “Rooted in Kindness”.  We want that kindness to be deeply rooted in our culture and to anchor the decisions we make.

If you have a child who will be entering kindergarten this school year and is NOT registered, please come by our main office between 8:30 am-3:30 pm ASAP to register your child.  If you know of someone who lives in our school boundary with a kindergarten age child, please remind them to register as well.

We will be holding school tours for new MRES families on Thursday, August 8 at 3:30 pm and on Wednesday, August 14 at 9:00 am.

Attendance Matters: Most weeks we will share information about the benefits of positive attendance.  For now please review the FCPS School Calendar.  To the best of your ability, please plan trips and appointments in such a way that your students are available for instruction, learning, and growth.

You are invited to our Open House on Friday,  August 16 to meet your child's teacher (more information on teacher assignments next month).  We have staggered the times to allow for smaller groups in the classrooms at a time and to minimize challenges with parking.  School supplies can be brought to the classroom, medications to our clinic, cash or checks to the cafeteria for deposit on students’ accounts.

  • Session 1 - 9:00-9:30 am – A-L (alpha last name)
  • Session 2 - 9:45-10:15 am – M-Z (alpha last name)

Please mark your calendar for our Back to School Night which will take place on Tuesday, September 3.  More details coming soon.

Below you will find important information to help you plan for the new school year.  We are excited to connect and partner with you in the exciting year ahead.  Please look for the Roadrunner Rundown on Monday afternoons throughout the school year unless we have a Monday holiday.  This communication is filled with important information that you don’t want to miss.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Much peace.
