Roadrunner RundownFebruary 10, 2025
Principal's MessageDear Marshall Road Families,
We are excited about the week ahead of us and like you, are waiting to see how the predicted snow will impact our week. We appreciate your patience and flexibility during these winter months.
We are having a February Kindness Challenge this month where students and teachers have been invited to participate in The Race to 100 Hearts. The goal of this activity is to encourage the spread of acts of kindness throughout the building. Please ask your child how their class is doing in completing the 100 acts of kindness. Remember that food items, including candy, should not be brought to school to share with other students at school. We have many students with allergies and want to ensure their safety. Non-edible treats are allowed. Thank you.
Thank you for following the safety guidelines at arrival and dismissal. Last Friday a safety specialist from the Office of Safety and Security observed our arrival procedures and reiterated that it is imperative that parents do not pull over on Marshall Road, Delilah Drive or Rachel Lane to pick up or drop off students. Please refer to this map with an alternate route that leads back to Nutley St.
There will be no school on Monday, February 17, in honor of Presidents’ Day.
Have a great week!

School Events and InformationAttendance Matters
Focusing on good attendance patterns at a young age is very important as it sets the stage for middle and high school attendance habits. By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator of struggles for success in high school. Let's work together to make sure MRES students are set up for success by making sure being in school is a priority.
3-Hour Early Release on February 24
We will have a 3-hour early release on Monday, February 24. Parents/guardians should plan to use the same dismissal plan that was previously used. SACC will be open at 1:05 pm for those who have students enrolled in SACC. Some students will be invited to stay beyond the early release time to receive additional tutoring to support significant absenteeism as needed. Please watch for further communication about the early release day.
Rising Kindergarten 2025-2026
If you have a preschool-age child who is eligible for kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year, please complete the Survey of Preschool Children form and email it to [email protected] (Shelly Koshuta, school registrar). A paper copy will be sent home in this week’s Tuesday Folders as well. This survey is due by March 31. If you know of any children in your neighborhood who this may apply to, please share this information, and ask them to contact the school office at 703-937-1500. If you have already contacted the registrar about enrolling your rising kindergarten student, you do not need to complete this form.
The rising kindergarten orientation will be held for parents and student(s) on April 28 at 2:00 pm.
Virginia law, Section 22.1-254 requires that children who will reach their fifth birthday on or before September 30, 2020, must be enrolled in kindergarten for the 2025-2026 school year unless the parent or guardian notifies the school in writing that they do not wish the child to attend school until the following year.
Thank you for your assistance in helping us identify school-age children.
PTA UpdateScience Share & STEAM Night
The PTA is excited to partner with the school to host a Science Share/STEAM Night on Thursday, February 20, 5:30-7:30 pm. Roadrunners will have an opportunity to share their own individual experiments. Everyone who prepares a project will be entered into a raffle for a gift certificate to the Book Fair. Share it in Padlet and your name will be entered twice! Details can be found in this flyer.
Families are invited to come and see the projects our student scientists prepared and there will also be an opportunity for students to participate in hands-on STEAM activities, including fun with oobleck (non-newtonian fluid), creating a battery with only pennies, and more!
We are seeking volunteers to assist students with hands-on STEAM activities at the event. Please consider signing up here to help make this event a success. You do not need to have a STEAM background to support this event. Middle and high school volunteers are welcome!
If you have questions, please contact PTA STEAM Night Lead Michelle Weinberger at [email protected].

FCPS CommunicationsNew Cash Register System for Students Buying Breakfast and Lunch
The Office of Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) is implementing a new cash register system and Marshall Road will be moving to this new system on Monday, February 24. FNS will provide personalized cards for each student that will include their identification number and barcode. This card can be scanned at the register or students can enter in their student ID. A 2-step verification process at the register will ensure the safety of student accounts is maintained. These cards will be provided to your student before going through the mail service line and will remain at school. Students are encouraged to learn their student ID as soon as possible so the service line runs efficiently and the card is no longer needed. You may access your student’s ID through your ParentVue account. Please support your student in learning their student ID. MySchoolBucks will be temporarily unavailable during the evening before the change to the new system.
